Guwahati, May 10 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said due to the improved security scenario in the North Eastern states the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) could be lifted in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades of insurgency. “AFSPA was always a major issue of concern for the common masses. In the last seven years of NDA rule security situation has improved drastically which resulted in removal of AFSPA from Nagaland, Manipur and 23 districts of Assam,” Shah said while addressing the Assam police personnel after presenting the President's Colour to the Assam Police for its exemplary service during the last 25 years. Shah bestowed the honor on the state police in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta at the 'Alankaran Parade' ceremony here. Praising the Assam police for its service, Shah said that the state police force valiantly fought the decade old insurgency in the region and also got misguided youths to join the mainstream. Shah added that the era of insurgency has come to an end in the last seven years of NDA rule. “Instead of AFSPA….we are now giving youths the development and dream of a bright future”. On his second day of visit, Shah will also attend the function one year anniversary celebration of the second BJP government in the state. UNI ABI BM
